Heel and Foot Pain.

Plantar Fasciitis. What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis literally is inflammation and pain where the plantar fascia attaches to your heel bone (calcaneus).

The plantar fascia is a fan of tissues that attaches the bones at the base of the toes to the heel. When this tissue is stretched repeatedly over time it sometimes gets tiny tears near the heel. These tears become inflamed and pain may radiate from the heel along the bottom of the foot. Another side effect that may happen is the formation of bone spurs on the heel with repeated activity. While these bone spurs don’t cause the pain in the foot they occur due to the chronic inflammation of the tissue.

What are some treatment options? Surgery is seldom needed to correct the problem. A number of ways to lessen the pain and inflammation include massage of the inflamed area, special orthotic shoe inserts, exercising the calf muscles of the affected leg, night splints, topical creams, and oral anti-inflammatory medications. Your doctor will decide which course of treatment will work best for your condition.
